The incident took place in Bridgeport around 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 18 near the Seaside Park Bathhouse.
The officers responded after the department received a 911 call of a person in the water, screaming and possibly drowning, said Scott Appleby, director of Emergency Management for the City of Bridgeport.
Bridgeport Fire & Police Marine units along with AMR were dispatched including Sgt. David Neary And Officer Jason Goncalves arrived on the scene first, Appleby said.
The park supervisor told the officers a man had run into the Long Island Sound to retrieve his dog. The water was deep and the man began to call for help, Appleby said.
Neary left his gear on the beach and entered the water wading to the man in jeopardy while Goncalves remained on the beach to direct the BFD personnel.
With the assistance of the BFD, the man and the dog were rescued, he said.
"This male would have drowned if not for Sergeant Neary's heroic action and the direction and command of Officer Goncalves and the immediate support of Bridgeport Fire Department," Appleby said. "Great job by all".
